Major tunnels can also have repeaters. This method also allows local programming to be transmitted such as traffic and weather in most major metropolitan areas, as of March 2004.

Each receiver has an Electronic Serial Number (ESN) Radio ID to identify it. When a unit is activated with a subscription, an authorization code is sent in the digital stream telling the receiver to allow access to the blocked channels. Most services have at least one "free to air" or "in the clear" (ITC) channel as a test. For example, Sirius uses channel 184, Sirius Weather & Emergency.

Most (if not all) of the systems in use now are proprietary, using different codecs for audio data compression, different modulation techniques, and/or different methods for encryption and conditional access.

Like other radio services, satellite radio also transmits program-associated data (PAD or metadata), with the artist and title of each song or program and possibly the name of the channel.

United States

In the United States, two companies operate satellite radio services: XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio, though these companies are merging. A monthly fee is charged for both services (as of 2005, Sirius also offers a one-time fee of nearly $500 valid for the lifetime of the equipment). Some XM music channels have commercials, while Sirius is commercial-free. Both services have commercial-free music stations, as well as talk and news stations, some of which include commercials. XM uses fixed-location geostationary satellites in two positions, and Sirius uses three geosynchronous satellites in highly elliptical orbits passing over North and South America, to transmit the digital streams. The net difference is that the Sirius signal comes from a higher elevation angle in the northern part of the U.S. and even more so in Canada. (This higher angle makes Sirius' signal less likely to drop out on cities, but more likely to drop out in parking garages, gas stations, tunnels, and other covered spaces.)

Both services are available mainly via portable receivers in automobiles, but both have many accessories so one can listen at home through a home stereo, with a portable boombox, or online through a personal computer. Both services now have some form of receiver that is completely portable.

Satellite radio's chief asset is the fact that it is not localized: drivers can receive the same programming anywhere in the footprint of the service. A stop at any truck stop will demonstrate the popularity of XM among long-haul drivers. In addition, both XM and Sirius carry programming that is simply not feasible on commercial radio stations. Specialty stations cover things such as family talk, radio drama, classical music, and live events.

The footprint of both Sirius and XM is only the United States (including Alaska), Canada, and the upper third of Mexico; it does not cover Hawaii as satellite TV does.

Success so far

As of Feb 28,2008 XM claims over 9 million subscribers, while Sirius claimed 7.6 million as of October 30, 2007. One critical factor for the success of satellite radio is the deployment of in-car receivers. Both Sirius and XM have attempted to convince automakers to equip vehicles with their receiver. As of 2007, the following manufacturers offer satellite radio as original Sirius has an exclusive contract for VW and Audi vehicles from 2007 through 2012[citation needed]. Those brands previously offered both services. GM, Honda and Suzuki are all major investors in XM; Sirius is not offered as options in their vehicles.[1] Bentley and Rolls-Royce come not only with receivers and lifetime subscriptions for Sirius service. XM is featured in select Harley-Davidson motorcycle models, while Sirius can be heard in several brands of recreational vehicles and boats.

One of the challenges for satellite radio has been to move away from cars and into the homes of consumers.[citation needed] Several portable satellite radio receivers have been made for this purpose. XM satellite radio has developed the XM2go line of "Walkman-like" portable receivers, such as the Delphi MyFi, the Pioneer AirWare and Giant International's Tao. Polk Audio makes a component-style home XM Reference Tuner[2] and a tabletop entertainment system, the I-Sonic[3], with XM capability. Sirius has developed the Kenwood Portable Satellite Radio Tuner, Sirius S50, Here2Anywhere and the Sirius Stiletto 100.[4] The Pioneer Inno and Samsung Helix for XM were among the first portable receivers to offer the ability of recording live content for playback later. Thus allowing for satellite radio to compete more fully with MP3 players.

While key agreements with automobile manufacturers are still being made, both companies have made the leap away from satellite radio only in the car and into the homes of consumers. One bump in the road to becoming more widely used in the home was both Sirius and XM running into legal issues in early 2006 with the FCC about their internal FM Transmitters. This required Sirius and XM to pull several of their models off the shelf and fix the problem. The FCC was claiming that the emissions of the internal FM Transmitters were too powerful and needed to be lowered. With these changes any customer buying a new satellite radio receiver doesn't achieve nearly the broadcast distance as the old models. Since this is a key point in the ability to use a satellite radio in the home (i.e. by taking the signal received and then broadcasting it to multiple points throughout the home at the same time and avoid having to bring the satellite radio with them as they move around the home) it has led many subscribers to use an external Personal Fm transmitter like the Whole House FM Transmitter, C Crane, Griffin Technology, etc. to replace the lower powered internal FM Transmitter. Since these external FM Transmitters are Part 15 compliant they can broadcast the signal further than the new internal FM Transmitters now included in the satellite radios and still be legal. These external FM transmitters may prevent a slow down in the progress already made into the home consumer market for Sirius and XM satellite radio.

Canada

On November 1, 2004, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) began hearing applications for Canada's first satellite radio operations. Three applications were filed: one by Standard Broadcasting and the CBC in partnership with Sirius, one by Canadian Satellite Radio in partnership with XM, and one at the last minute by CHUM Limited and Astral Media.

The first two would use the same systems already set up for the U.S., while CHUM's application is for a subscription radio service delivered through existing terrestrial DAB transmitters rather than directly by satellite (although satellites would be used to deliver programming to the transmitters). The CHUM service is all-Canadian; the other two applications propose to offer a mix of Canadian-produced channels and existing channels from their American partner services.

A small "gray market" already exists for Sirius and XM receivers in Canada in which a Canadian would have an American order their receiver and setup.

On June 16, 2005, the CRTC approved all three services.[5]

In its decision, the CRTC required the following conditions from the satellite radio licensees:

A minimum of eight channels must be produced in Canada, and for each Canadian channel, nine foreign channels can be broadcast.

At least 85% of the content on the Canadian-produced channels (whether musical or spoken word) must be Canadian.

At least 25% of the Canadian channels must be French-language stations.

At least 25% of the music aired on the Canadian channels must be new Canadian music.

At least 25% of the music played on the Canadian channels must be from up-and-coming Canadian artists.

These conditions were an extension of the existing Canadian content rules applicable to all broadcasters in Canada. The applicants had until 13 November

2005, to notify the CRTC of their decision. Both companies managed to negotiate the standards a little to their favor, and in return, they would instead play 50% French content as opposed to 25%. Also, XM Canada succeeded in getting an extra five channels of National Hockey League Play-by-Play onto their platform, without an additional channel creation, by agreeing to cover every Canadian team's game during the season.

CHUM appealed the decision, claiming they would not survive if Sirius and XM both were allowed in the Canadian market, and that the licence conditions regarding Canadian content imposed on Canadian Satellite Radio and Sirius Canada were too lax. Canadian Satellite Radio and Sirius Canada countered that CHUM was simply trying to create a monopoly in the Canadian market.

In late August 2005, Heritage Minister Liza Frulla asked the Federal Cabinet to review the CRTC decision and possibly send it back to the CRTC for further review. Lobbyists complained that the CRTC decision did not require enough Canadian content from the broadcasters. The broadcasters responded by promising to add additional Canadian and French content.

After vigorous lobbying from both sides, the Federal Cabinet officially accepted the CRTC decision on September 10, 2005.

I have personally have tried both DISH Network and DIRECTV and there is definitely not the best of both worlds in just one satellite TV service provider. With DISH Network you have a lower monthly bill than DIRECTV and that is a plus, but the remote control via DIRECTV is alot better than DISH Network.

At least it is at this present time, who knows one satellite the roles might be reversed. Also, the DVR from DIRECTV is nice but then DISH Network came out with TURBO HD. I have not tried TURBO HD by DISH Network, but the name is good for marketing purposes. Now when it comes to television channels, whether it be movie channels like HBO, SHOWTIME, CINEMAX or STARZ, the satellite tv service is all the same. The basic channels like ABC, CBS and NBC are no different either. It's when you get into the specialty channels that each provider has packaged and cut deals with the producers and distributors is where they stand apart.

But I have to say, when it gets down to the nuts and bolts, you better have a good TV to play your HD Satellite TV!

As somebody that lives in a fairly remote community, miles and miles from a gas station, convenience store, or movie theater-much less a cable company! I had for a long time imagined that I would be forever relegated satellite accessing the net via my decade old dial-up modem, which gives me truly dismal download speeds barely above 50kbps. Analog TV Digital Transmission

Remember the old days satellite analog TV, radio, etc. Most of us do unless youre really young. And still today there are plenty of analog systems in use. Normal radio still uses analog transmission. But the digital age has begun and more and more we will use digital systems rather than analog systems.

Digital transmission systems have many advantages over analog transmission systems, like higher quality of audio and video. How come digital systems can transmit higher quality signals than analog systems? The truth is that they dont. They just use some tricks to eliminate noise.

Analog Transmission Systems

When something like video and audio, is recorded by an analog system, the recording has a certain quality. This recording (when done professionally) has a very high quality. When the recording is transmitted it is modulated directly to a carrier wave, which is then transmitted through the air, cable, via satellite, etc. During this transmission, the carrier and the modulated signal will loose amplitude (power) and due to interference noise is introduced to the carrier and its modulated signal. The result will always be a received signal that has a lower quality than the transmitted signal. Hence, the modulated signal, the recording, will also be of lower quality than the original.

Analog transmission systems are unable to maintain the quality the original has.

Digital Transmission Systems

In the digital world the recording can be transmitted to another place without loosing any quality. An exact copy of the original recording is transmitted. So how come that digital transmission systems dont loose quality when transmitting a signal?

Well..... Actually they do lose quality just like the analog transmission system does.

Surprised? No Problem. Most people dont know that digital signals still need to be transmitted by analog transmission systems. The trick is that a digital system doesnt record analog signals, but encodes analog signals into bits (zeros and ones). A sample is taken many times per second and the size of each sample is written down in bits. For instance a sample with the value of 9 would be 1001 and 11 would be 1011.

The digital transmission system needs to transmit those zeros and ones, and it does this by modulating the carrier wave. Low power for a 0 and high power for a 1 (This is the most simple way of modulating. There are much more sophisticated satellite of modulation, but it would take a whole book to describe them all.)

So on the receiving end, it doesnt matter anymore what the quality of the signal is, as long as it still is possible to identify the zeros and ones. Noise in the received signal is no problem. A 1 with noise is still a 1 and a 0 with noise is still a 0. Of course the noise can not be too high, otherwise mistakes would be made and a zero would be received as one or a one would be received as a zero.

So Digital Transmission Systems are better because they eliminate the effect of noise completely. You dont look and listen to a received signal from an original recording, but you look and listen to a reproduced signal of the recording. The reproduction comes from an exact copy of the original recording.

The quality of what you see and hear now depends on your TV and Sound System. A high quality TV and Sounds System will give you high quality Video and Audio. The negative effects of the (still analog) transmission have been eliminated from the process.

Satellite TV makes use of Digital Transmission Systems. What you see at home will always be of Digital no (much less) noise Quality.

Dish Network Rolls Out 1080p HDTV Format

Unless you happen to know a bit about HDTV, 1080p probably does not mean a whole heck of a lot to you. However, to those of us who consider ourselves HDTV geeks, it's a pretty big deal. 1080p is currently satellite highest-resolution HD format available today, which means it delivers top-of-the-line picture quality when compared to all other formats.

Most consumers are probably not interested in the technical details of why 1080p is better than 1080i, and that the "p" stands for progressive and the "i" stands for interlaced. Just know that progressive is the format that is going to give you the best HDTV picture currently available.

If you have not yet joined the ranks of HDTV owners, there may be no better time than now to do so. This is due to the fact that DISH Network is now the only national subscription broadcaster to offer 1080p programming. DISH Network's main competitor, DirecTV, says it is planning to offer 1080p programming later this year, but has not been more specific than that about a timetable.

There are usually a host of various DISH Network deals to take advantage of that offer free programming for a few months or free gifts when you subscribe.

And since my TV supports a maximum resolution of 1080i, I was not even seeing the best that HDTV has to offer, which is of course, 1080p.

Unfortunately for HDTV owners like myself, DISH network's new 1080p programming will not benefit me until I have a television capable of accepting a 1080p signal. I guess I'll have to start dropping coins into my piggy bank again very soon!

As a DISH Network customer who has a VIP622 DVR (Digital Video Recorder), my unit will probably be upgraded to 1080p capability any day now by way of a software download direct to the DVR, without any intervention on my part. The capabilities of the devices that provide our entertainment these days is simply amazing.

The first thing that you can do is to buy a TV Tuner card for your computer. A tuner card plugs into one of the available PCI slots in your computer, and then you put the TV cable on that card. The card will come with some software that will allow you to flip through the channels on your cable TV service.

This method is good when you just want an extra place to watch your current TV service on your PC. If you are totally satisfied with the TV cable service that you currently have, this may be an option for you. A good TV Tuner card will run anywhere from $50-$100, and will include all of the software that you need to get going.

The second method, which is what I use, is to join a service that will let you watch thousands of TV stations online. The only thing that you have to do is join the service, and have an Internet connection. That is all you need.

The cost to join a TV on your PC service is right at $50 for everything that you need. Unlike just using the cable that you currently have, you have access to hundreds of channels from many different countries. Boogeyman 2 is so bad it defies the English language, but some people may disagree.

To begin with, this movie isn't even a real sequel other than a passing reference to the first movie, and while I appreciate a sequel that attempts to go off in it's own direction, this one goes so far from the first movie that it really upset me that satellite tv used the dreaded number 2 in its title since I was among the few that actually liked the original.

This story has nothing to do with an actual "boogeyman", like the first movie did, but with a serial killer. The first film was a witty monster movie with ghost story elements thrown in. Boogeyman 2 is strictly a slasher movie and a terrible mystery tale to boot.

We are supposed to constantly believe in the totally unbelievable in this movie. The acting is awful, the direction is lumbering and lacks any real thrill, the death knell for any so-called thriller, and the storyline is just.

The movie opens with a young brother and sister witnessing the slaying of their parent in a very graphic manner and totally out of sync with the concept of the first movie. The kids are sent off to an asylum to help them cope with what they saw. The brother gets released, but the sister who got over things sooner re-enters when she satellite tv her brother doesn't seem to need her anymore as he once did and she begins seeing the images of the crazed killer again who was never caught and she believes is a true Boogeyman.

The rest plays out like any poor slasher sequel with phone lines cut, the teenagers trapped, all adults gone, and one lone survivor trying to tell her story, but no one believes her. The cast still find time for some sex even though people are dropping left and right around them.

Simply put Boogeyman 2 is awful movie making and all connected to this movie should be embarrassed. I can't imagine any hardcore slasher movie buffs enjoying this movie at all, but I'm sure some of them will.

Boogeyman 2 is so bad it defies the English language, but some people may disagree.
